How did you get into the construction industry?

I initially got involved in the construction industry while studying civil engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park.  As a junior, I was fortunate enough to get an internship with a large general contractor performing work right on campus.  That early work experience exposed me to construction projects, and allowed me to see everything that the industry had to offer.  From that point on, my career path has gone from running work as a project manager in the field, to handling all types of bids, estimates, and budgets.

In your opinion, what skills are needed to a be a successful Estimating professional?

There are many skills that are beneficial to have within the estimating profession.  Three of the most important are communicating effectively, being detail-oriented, and utilizing creativity.  Whether it is communicating with a client, trade partner, or co-worker, it is important to be able to clearly, and concisely, deliver the required message.  Being detail-oriented with takeoffs, scopes, and overall estimates is essential to providing the necessary level of accuracy.   Thinking outside the box, and coming up with creative solutions to problems, is a key element to being successful in a competitive market.

You recently joined the Chesapeake team! What do you like most about working at Chesapeake so far?

Teamwork.  Chesapeake has a great atmosphere where teamwork is an important part of the company’s success.  Every colleague that I have met so far has been willing to assist wherever needed, to ensure a positive outcome.

What do you like most about being the Preconstruction Director?

The best part about my job is having the ability to work on a wide variety of projects and product types.  Every individual bid/budget has it’s own unique features, which allows me the opportunity to continue learning.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Most of my free time is spent with my family.  My wife, Sandra, and I have two amazing daughters, a five-year old and one-year old.  We enjoy spending time at playgrounds/parks, as well as going to zoos/farms to see the animals.  I also enjoy playing golf, watching soccer and football, and spending time with friends.
