Meet Ray Moriconi – Director of Technology & Innovation and this month’s Hard Hat Hang Up.

How did you get into the construction industry?

I entered the construction industry through an unexpected but rewarding career transition. My journey began at McCormick & Co., where I worked as a staff accountant in the IT Department before moving into a technical leadership role. After eight years, I was given an incredible opportunity to build and lead an IT Department for a large nationwide general contractor. This role allowed me to merge my technical expertise with the complex, fast-paced world of construction. Over 24 years, I honed my skills in technology leadership, innovation, and problem-solving within the industry, shaping my career in ways I never initially anticipated.

What do you enjoy most about your role as the Director of Technology & Innovation?

As the Director of Technology & Innovation, I am passionate about driving transformative change and fostering a culture of continuous improvement. I develop and implement I.T. policies and systems that align with Chesapeake’s goals, ensuring strategic growth and efficiency. Collaborating with talented teams, I create innovative solutions that address current needs while proactively anticipating future challenges by staying ahead of technology trends to enhance Chesapeake’s processes.

How do you keep up with the fast pace of technological advancements?

\Keeping up with the fast-paced technological advancements in the construction industry requires a proactive approach.  My goals for staying ahead include continuous learning, active networking and collaboration, staying informed on industry trends and research, and piloting and testing new technologies to drive innovation and efficiency.  The rapid evolution and availability of new technologies demand caution and patience to minimize risk and ensure effective implementation.

If you could share one piece of advice for staying secure in today’s digital world, what would it be?

“Stop, Pause, and Think.” This simple yet powerful approach helps develop a security-focused mindset, reducing the risk of falling victim to cyber threats, scams, and risky situations. And don’t forget—enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) wherever possible, not just at work but across all personal accounts, especially financial accounts.

What do you like most about working at Chesapeake?

Being part of a team where leadership values and understands I.T. expertise makes a meaningful difference. At Chesapeake, I collaborate with experienced professionals who share my passion for technology and innovation. This alignment has been highly motivating, enabling me to contribute effectively to our shared goals. The supportive culture and commitment to collaboration make a significant impact on our collective success.

What hobbies or activities do you enjoy when you’re not at work?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife, my two adult children, my new son-in-law, and my soon-to-be daughter-in-law. I’m an avid cyclist, runner and enjoy playing tennis.
