Meet Kelsey O’Malley, Project Accountant, and this month’s Hard Hat Hang Up.

How did you get into the construction industry?

Growing up, my father worked in the construction industry, and I was always around it. I remember hearing his stories and learning about different aspects of the trade. I entered the construction field unexpectedly through a career transition. I’m currently studying Business Administration and was looking for a career that aligned with my field of study. During my search, I came across Chesapeake Contracting Group. After reviewing their values, I felt it would be a great fit for me.

What do you like most about being a Project Accountant?

What I enjoy most about being a Project Accountant is that every day is different with the constant opportunity to grow and learn along the way. My team has been incredibly helpful in guiding me through each aspect of the position, especially since my previous roles didn’t have a strong focus on accounting.

What does an average day as a Project Accountant look like?

A day in the life of a Project Accountant is always varied. One of my primary responsibilities is accounts payable, where I handle all miscellaneous invoices. I handle communication with vendors regarding any miscellaneous questions they may have. Each of us is assigned different projects to manage as the Project Accountant. For those projects, I’m responsible for sending open payables, printing checks, providing waivers to vendors, and maintaining regular communication with each project team.

What do you enjoy most about Chesapeake?

What I enjoy most about Chesapeake is the opportunity to grow and learn while working toward achieving my goals. I really appreciate groups like Women of Chesapeake and Future Leaders of Chesapeake, which not only help you focus on your role within the company but also foster connections with colleagues and the community. Chesapeake is dedicated to your success and offers countless opportunities for personal and professional growth.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not at work?

Outside of work, I love spending time with my husband and family, reading, attending car shows, hiking, photography, taking weekend trips to Ocean Pines, and exploring new places.
